Short intro
The Coast Is Never Clear was the third album released by indie rock band Beulah in 2001. Originally planned for release on Capricorn Records, the label was folded into Island Def Jam Records along with many of its artists including 311. However, Beulah, The Glands, Jucifer, and The Honeyrods were not sold along with the other properties of the label. Former employees of Capricorn formed Velocette in order to release albums by the displaced bands, forcing the release date to be pushed back until. Legendary third album -and also, their best release- of this rock band based in San Francisco, California. Every song is a masterpiece. Album 2001 12 Songs. Essence of California, distilled, clarified, and boiled down to 40 minutes of pure pop pleasure: The Coast Is Never Clear is an unjustly ignored masterpiece of musical mad science. Singer Miles Kurosky writes gorgeously textured orchestral pop that builds on a base of Pavement-style guitar rock, borrows from the Beach Boys, Burt Bacharach, and Herb Alpert, then - what the hell - throws in hints of lounge, bossa nova, punk, and country, setting the whole over bitterly ironic lyrics delivered with a cynics detachment. Beulah's previous album, When Your Heartstrings Break, was a masterpiece of orchestral 60s-style pop. From start to finish, it was catchy and unique, taking the style of 60s pop and turning it into something uniquely its own, replete with clever lyrics and impossible-to-shake hooks. On the surface, Beulah appears to have successfully replicated this formula. The Coast is Never Clear sounds a lot like its predecessor, but it lacks the originality and heartfelt delivery that won When Your Heartstrings Break a constant presence in so many disc players a couple summers back. The band is sarcastically sweet on What Will You Do When Your Suntan Fades, while emulating what everyone has faced in the role of eager, adoring wooer.
