Such works have been written since the Baroque period, when the solo concerto form was first developed, up through the present day. Many major composers have contributed to the violin concerto repertoire, with the best known works including those by Bach, Bartók, Beethoven, Brahms, Bruch, Dvořák, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Paganini, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Sibelius. The Violin Concerto was written by Lees in 1958 in France at about the same time Ned Rorem was there. It was premiered by Henryk Szeryng in Boston in 1963. The work is traditional, tonal, inventive and memorable. The Starer is a three movement concerto for viola with strings and percussion. Starer was born in Vienna and during the Second World War served in the Royal Air Force. It was written in Spring 1958 in Vienna and premiered in Switzerland. The melody that bestrides the first movement is so succulent that it might almost have been by Korngold - in fact I am sure that Korngold would have coveted it. Classicism is a musical period quite well defined: conventionally it goes from about 1750 to mid 19th century, including composers such as Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Rolla. Here too, we consider the broader meaning of the term concerto and include other works featuring the viola in a solo, concertante role with orchestra. Among these, there is one of the most wonderful works ever written: Mozart Sinfonia Concertante for violin, viola and orchestra. There are more: Karl Ditters von Dittersdorf: ConcertoSinfonia Concertante for viola and double bass in D major. Read about Starer: Violin Concerto: I.
