With Karl Böhm conducting a superb cast including the astounding Paul Schöffler as Pizarro, the heroic Torsten Ralf as Florestan, and the magnificent Hilde Konetzni as Leonore, this February 1944 performance is exalted and exalting, a performance that forces listeners to become deeper, higher, better human beings all the time all the while wondering what effect it had on a Viennese audience after. In this live performance from 1943 recorded from a radio broadcast, Karl Böhm leads the Vienna State. This performance featured Hilde Konetzni, Torsten Ralf, Paul Schöffler, Herbert Alsen, and Irmgard Karl Böhm found fire fighters with working equipment and persuaded I assume that means bribed them to extinguish the blaze, but they only saved the foyer, the grand staircase and the front facade. The post-war rebuilding, promised for 1949, was finally completed in 1955.
