The Philharmonia Orchestra was in superb form in the autumn of 1957 when the opportunity came for it to perform all nine Beethoven symphonies, plus the five piano concertos, in a series of 10 concerts at London's Royal Festival Hall under the baton of Otto Klemperer. There's no doubt it's cruelly taxing for the chorus to sing those repeated top notes for so much of the movement, but this performance caused me to cringe as each of those notes was painfully emitted. It ruined my enjoyment of an otherwise wonderful rendition - and the rest of the chorus work was really quite fine. Ludwig van Beethoven - Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. The Symphony No. 125, is a choral symphony, the final complete symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven, composed between 1822 and 1824. It was first performed in Vienna on 7 May 1824. The symphony is regarded by many critics and musicologists as Beethoven's greatest work and one of the supreme achievements in the history of western music. One of the best-known works in common practice music, it stands as one of the most performed symphonies in the world. Aase Nordmo-Løvberg, Christa Ludwig, Waldemar Kmentt, Hans Hotter. Philharmonia Chorus & Orchestra, Otto Klemperer. Otto Klemperer's energy and momentum come not from his tempos but from the way the rhythms are articulated. In the first movement and Scherzo the heroic, teeth-gritted determination are physically.
