I now own THREE slightly different Beethoven cycles with Claudio Abbado and the Berlin Philharmonic - two on DG CD, and this one on EuroArts DVD. This DVD is the set to have out of the three, and for the following reasons: 1. The sound is better on these DVDs than either of the CD versions on DG. Listen to Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. Herbert von Karajan recorded Ludwig van Beethoven's complete symphonies four times, first in the 1950s with the Philharmonia Orchestra on EMI, then on three more occasions with the Berlin Philharmonic for Deutsche Grammophon. Karajan's 1963 cycle with Berlin is highly regarded by fans for its consistent interpretations and energetic and emotional playing. Conductor and orchestra subsequently toured the cycle, and the performances they gave in Rome in January 2001 were recorded on video and released on DVD. Our interpretative vision had matured. The concerts in Rome marked significant advances in terms of spirit, style and technique, says Abbado. Strictly speaking, the set is not entirely new to CD. The playing in the Fourth, Sixth and Eighth Symphonies marries the precision and suavity of modern instruments with the vitality of period performance practice. There's some sluggish scherzi and a heavy Fifth, Abbado's tempi is notably fleet, the sound radiant. But in the Second and Seventh Symphonies, emphasis on textural detail dilutes the drama. At mid-price, this set would be a steal. At full price, I'd hesitate. Beethoven - Composer.
