I guess there are lots of words I could use when discussing Beat Happening like indie and minimalism and female vocals and cool and unique and they dont have a bassist but Im not actually going to use any of those words when I talk about Beat Happening. I suppose I should explain why exactly I love the album You Turn Me On as much as I do. Well, first of all, it is an extremely sweet and nice album with childish and lovey-dove lyrics that make me feel quite young again, which is honestly one of the only things I look for in music anymore because Im now in my later teenage years and I miss my early childhood but we wont go into any of that. Beat Happening's final LP is also their best: concluding the emotional and musical progression begun with the minimalist innocence of their earliest work, You Turn Me On is a mature record of tremendous breadth and complexity. Where once the trio's songs were brief and bouncy, the nine tracks here are epic several top out at over six minutes and ambitious produced in part by ex-Young Marble Giant Stuart Moxham an obvious influence, the record's full, deep sound belies its bare-bones performances - Teenage Caveman sports booming, primal drums perfectly suited to. You Turn Me On is Beat Happening's masterpiece, a surprisingly accomplished, pretty, and restrained record that remains one of the definative indie-pop records of all-time. This time around, the guitars are clean, the songs are all hits, the cuteness is still high, and Heather Lewis' lush vocals are given more time along with Calvin Johnson's awful-yet-charming baritone.
