Notes

The BBC Radiophonic Workshop's long association with the Doctor Who series began with the Signature Tune for the very first programme. Ron Grainer provided the composition notes and the Workshop did the rest. The incidental music on this LP was composed by Malcolm Clarke, Peter Howell and Roger Limb on a shared basis over the series, which accounts for the varying styles of composition.

Doctor Who - The Caves of Androzani - The BBC Radiophonic Workshop. The BBC Radiophonic Workshop was one of the sound effects units of the BBC, created in 1958 to produce incidental sounds and new music for radio and, later, television. The unit is known for its experimental and pioneering work in electronic music and music technology, as well as its popular scores for programs such as Doctor Who and Quatermass and the Pit during the 1950s and 1960s. By that time, most of their traditional work had been outsourced to other companies. They were based in the BBC's Maida Vale studios in London, gradually growing outwards from the then legendary Room 13. Learn more. Recent Listening Trend. The Dr Who theme tune is the most famous piece from the BBCs Radiophonic Workshop. Andrew Harrison looks back to the teams groundbreaking inventions. The avant-garde music known as radiophonics influenced pop from The Beatles through to modern dance music and techno, even though its progenitors were not eccentric art visionaries but salaried BBC engineers and composers who never earned royalties from their work. It was founded in 1958 to create effects for radio and TV, and quickly became Britain's leading electronic sound laboratory. As the film composer Steven Price says in this clip from a Radio 3 Free Thinking documentary on the Radiophonic Workshop, the music created there became the soundtrack of his childhood. And it was in the Workshop that the original Doctor Who theme was realised in 1963, principally by one visionary employee. Delia Derbyshire. The CD promises music, sound effects, atmospheres, and ambiences from the BBC's Radiophonic Workshop, and it delivers one of the eeriest listening experiences that one can find in soundtracks - if this had been released circa 1967, it would have quickly been picked up as one of the great druggy soundtrack accompaniments of its period
