Short intro

The Broadway Album is the twenty-fourth studio album by American singer Barbra Streisand, released by Columbia Records on November 4, 1985. Consisting mainly of classic show tunes, the album marked a major shift in Streisand's career. She had spent ten years appearing in musicals and singing standards on her albums in the 1960s. Beginning with the album Stoney End in 1971 and ending with the album Emotion in 1984, Streisand sang mostly rock, pop, folk, and disco-oriented songs for Columbia records. As its title indicates, this 1985 recording marked Barbra Streisands return to her Broadway roots significantly, she had dropped her pop-period Guilty perm and returned to straight hair. The CD contains a broad selection of show tunes, from Guys and Dollss Adelaides Lament to Sweeney Todds Not While Im Around. But lets face it: this may also be one of Babss most dated albums, due to typically 80s synthesizer-heavy arrangements that simply dont work with the material. Barbra Streisands 1985 return to her Great White Way roots gives the storied singer a chance to show off her prowess and versatility. While much of The Broadway Album is made up of works by Stephen Sondheim-who added Babs-tailored lyrics to the luminous ballad Send in the Clowns and the frenetic Putting It Together, and whose co-write Somewhere quickly became one of Streisands standards-her vampy version of the sneeze-afflicted Adelaides Lament from Frank Loessers Guys and Dolls shows. off the belters keen comedic instincts. This triumphant album sold over 7.5 million copies. Striesand's voice sounds rich and at its peak. This album evokes happy personal memories of singing along with my mother. From the liner "it was inevitable that so many of the songs would be the work of Stephen Sondheim - the most important voice in the American musical theatre of today." Sondheim re-wrote many lyrics specifically for Barbra and this album. Sleeve includes full lyrics and detailed notes.
