I compared their sound to that of (former) label-mates CLOCK DVA in a previous review, and although MARTIN's voice has a definite ADI NEWTON deep whisper tone to it, the actual music is leagues brighter and perkier on this single which thrills along (certainly on the two versions of the title track) with a slender but effective post-EBM danceability. Their cover of the old ELVIS song bears almost no resemblence to the original (sigh of relief), and overall it's colourful electro single-mindedness makes up tenfold for the lean lack of density that this music has. ATTRITION have been going since the early Eighties when we could see them regularly down the local pub, and my last experience of physical violence (other than as part of my day job) was just after they had played when a gang of Skins took offence to my unwillingness to cow to their pathetic threats (hey, they had brought the gig to a standstill, bottled the female bassist and were generally a pain*) - so I've grown up with their sound. But no group can maintain around two decades worth of underground success without some talent, and they certainly don't lack in that area. Truth be told, you either like them or you don't. You should have come across them in your audio travels by now, and if you have ever thought they had some good ideas but lacked the ability to put it over efficiently, now is the time to rediscover ATTRITION.
*Don't get me wrong - I'm no warrior - I lost quite a bit of blood that night!
