Short intro

Jun Ray Song Chang is the third album and first compilation by experimental band Asa-Chang & Junray, released through The Leaf Label on September 17, 2002. It compiles their second album and most of their first one alongside two new tracks. Asa-Chang - string arrangements, bongos, producing, trumpets, vocals. Shoukichi Kina - composing. Kiyoshi Kusaka - engineering, mixing, programming. Kazufumi Kodama - percussion, programming. Hidehiko Urayama - guitars, programming. Yoshimi P We - programming. Asa-Chang & Junray have been performing since 1998, and Jun Ray Song Chang is their first release outside of Japan. It's a compilation of their first two Japanese releases, and is fortunately interesting on more than just technical grounds. The sounds here are unexpectedly diverse with a band featuring only two percussionists and a programmer, that's a major feat, especially given that each song appears to have been an exercise in making due with only the barest necessities. Kutsu Asa-Chang & Junray is about the friction between self-taught tabla-bongo guru Asa-Chang who spends his professional life as a touring percussionist with multi-million-selling J-pop acts, and traditionally instructed tabla master U-Zhaan. Programmer Hidehiko Urayama never appears onstage, but his presence is felt through the sound system machine, Junreit. Media Factory Inc. Released on: 2002-06-17. Asa-Chang & Junray. Jun Ray Sung Chang. Hana opens the album, the disfigured call and response between cut-up spoken word and Asa-Chang's drunken clacks of percussion comparable to a Lynch-esque car crash, with a hair-raising blend of emotive string rises left to rein in the chaotic drum works. This first track pretty much summates an album which collates the band's recordings for the Hot Cha and Trattoria imprints, all recorded in the spirit of kidoairaku, a Japanese word encapsulating the full emotive spectrum of humanity, where thunderclaps are as likely as psychotic beats or simple jazz-folk compositions.
