Short intro
Farmer's Market is an album by trumpeter Art Farmer, featuring performances recorded in 1956 and released on the New Jazz label. for Europe led him to playing the softer toned flugelhorn and trumpet exclusively, it is an important document in his legacy, comparing favorably alongside peers Clifford Brown, Miles Davis, and an also emerging Donald Byrd or Lee Morgan. In 1956, trumpeter Art Farmer was teamed with tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley and pianist Horace Silver in one of the most vital and important modern jazz groups of the seminal hard bop era. Art Farmer. Play album. Get album. Farmer's Market boasts excellent work from both horn players. This was my first experience with Art Farmer, and I found him to be a very mellow, tasteful trumpet player with tone that sets the mood for the whole session. He's not quite as fiery as a Freddie Hubbard or Donald Byrd here, but that doesn't seem to be what this material calls for. The two ballads without Mobs are very elegant, with beautiful work by Drew and Farmer. Mobley returns to the fold for the rollicking Wailin' with Hank, which closes out the album. This album is one of those mid 1950's Prestige sessions. Supervision by Bob Weinstock, engineering by Rudy Van Gelder, and notes by Ira Gitler. Farmer's Market album.
