Short intro
Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not is the debut studio album by English rock band Arctic Monkeys, released on 23 January 2006 by Domino Recording Company. The album surpassed Elastica's self-titled album to become the fastest selling debut album in British music history, shifting over 360,000 copies in its first week, and remains the fastest selling debut album by a band. It has since gone 6 Platinum in the UK. The title Whatever People Say I Am, Thats What Im Not is a direct quote from the 1960 British film Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, which the band drew inspiration from for some of the albums lyrics. This was the only Arctic Monkeys album not to be produced by James Ford, who arrived for their sophomore effort and has stuck around to this day in all of the bands releases. What accolades did the album earn . Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not is the Mercury Prize-winning debut album by the band Arctic Monkeys, released on 23 January 2006. All British. All Northern. All debut albums. I'm talking, of course, about Oasis' Definitely Maybe and The Stone Roses' self-titled. I'm far from the first to make that comparison - in fact, it's beginning to get irritating. The thing is, though, it's a comparison I feel needs to be made, because it highlights just where The Arctic Monkeys are different. This is the only record of the three to not be proclaim. Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not is the debut album by Sheffield band Arctic Monkeys, released on 23 January 2006. The album became the fastest selling debut album in the UK since Definitely Maybe by Oasis. The album sold over 360,000 copies in its first week, but lost the title in November 2007 to Leona Lewis's album Spirit. Riotous tracks like The View from the Afternoon and Dancing Shoes, with their twitchy drum lines and broken guitar scales, are both wobbly and anthemic they provide a fitting backdrop to Alex Turner's stories of weekend rock stars who dodge the police, hustle club bouncers, and dance to electro-pop from 1984. Whatever People Say I Am is practically an old-fashioned concept album about working-class clubbing, a Saturday Night Fever for the British sons and daughters of parents raised on disco and punk. Yet Turners aim isnt to be the best dancer, or to escape to the big city: Its merely stayin alive, and pulling a few birds. Subsequent songs name those things - bored cops pummeling underage drinkers vindictive doormen and fistRelated to Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
