Short intro
From Here to Infirmary is the third album by Chicago-based punk rock band Alkaline Trio. It was their first album for Vagrant and their only album with the drummer Mike Felumlee, who replaced the previous drummer Glenn Porter. When Felumlee left the band shortly after the album's release, drummer Atom Willard filled in with the group on tour and appeared in the music video for Private Eye, before the band found a permanent replacement in Derek Grant. For its first five years together, Alkaline Trio was an extremely prolific and consistent band with a full-length coming out almost yearly, along with innumerable split 7s and EPs. So it's no surprise that a slump was coming, and it arrived in the form of the band's third full-length, From Here to Infirmary. After moving from the garage-based operation Asian Man Records to indie giant Vagrant, the Trio - with dollar signs in its eyes - assumed a lighter, more mainstream sound. In an interview in April of 2003, Matt explained the title of the album. Despite a later episode of The Simpsons using From Here to Infirmary for an Itchy & Scratchy segment, believed to be the inspiration, the title actually comes from NOFX. Matt says: NOFX always has really awesome play on words, with record titles like Punk in Drublic and Pump Up the Valium. Let's go back to 1998. Alkaline Trio, the punk group emerging from Chicago, burst onto the scene in a gritty display. Their debut record Goddamnit set the tone for what would become their sole purpose in the music industry - Creating dark, gloomy, yet still incredibly catchy music with a keen precision. Fast forward two more years and we're served another dose of grisly wit with Maybe I'll Catch Fire. A mere year after Maybe I'll Catch Fire, the trio returns with their third studio album From Here To Infirmary. As expected, everything that the group has been adored for in the past returns in full force, if not a little watered down. There's quite a bit that Alkaline Trio's music is not. It's not challenging, ambitious, or visionary. It's not clever or self-aware. Already known for playing paradoxically dour but upbeat poppunk, the Trio, dive a little deeper and darker on From Here to Infirmary than on previous efforts. But even with an obsidian sheen, they still play catchy, riff-saturated edgy pop. A dozen tracks of it, if that's what you're craving. Admittedly, some of the music is a tad too derivative for your average rock snob. The riffs on You're Dead are pretty suggestive of the mid-90's Everclear hit Fire Maple Song. And Private Eye opens with tonal qualities borrowed from the Bossanova se. Tuning: Standard By: joshuaoliveira .
