Short intro

Alka's third full-length but first for the wider world of distributed records matches sleek, moody techno with atmospheric samples and effects evoking late nights on deserted streets or in disused manufacturing facilities. His sense for production serves him well here no slave to the rhythm, Alka spends long beatless passages exploring the world of invisible soundtracks, using field recordings and a range of sound dynamics to call up nearly any mood that fits the track. Deployed, 2008. Initial Signal, 03:55. Salt Lake, 07:29. Alka is the unsung hero of minimal techno, or they've just not had enough distributionexposure since 2002 for this album to 'take off' yet, as the airplane-laden cover may suggest. At any rate, Alka's Deployed CD is rich in variety, yet strong in cohesiveness at the same time. For starters, the ambient atmosphere is deep, cold, and aquatic. Percussion-wise, some tight Autechre-like loops or sounds pulse in, but for the most part, it's the numbing techno kick-snare combo that is more prevalent. Acts like Porter Ricks or Fluxion are the closest I would compa. Album 2002 11 Songs. Dance 2002. free to Alka Deployed Initial Signal, Salt Lake and more. 11 tracks 70:39. DEPLOYED starts on a quiet, sustained ambient note, but don't let that fool you: Alka has some tricks up its sleeve. "Salt Lake" gets the minimal beats going as the melodic tones hover far above, like clouds, until the beat finally falls away. "Jr 500," on the other hand, starts deeps and stays there, while "Mifa" once again balances the airy with the rhythm. "Uart" brings things back down, like downtime at the factory, and "Broscam Mangrows" extends that mood. (The two "Cargo Area" tracks return to ambience.) And finally, "Cont-Figure" and "Parallel Fold" ends the album on a chilly note, maintain a small bit of energy amongst the near 0 Kelvin temperatures.

This is an incredible find. Alka is the unsung hero of minimal techno, or they've just not had enough distribution/exposure since 2002 for this album to 'take off' yet, as the airplane-laden cover may suggest. At any rate, Alka's "Deployed" CD is rich in variety, yet strong in cohesiveness at the same time. For starters, the ambient atmosphere is deep, cold, and aquatic. Percussion-wise, some tight Autechre-like loops or sounds pulse in, but for the most part, it's the numbing techno kick-snare combo that is more prevalent. Acts like Porter Ricks or Fluxion are the closest I would compare in its entirety.

Is Alka original and strong enough to stand on their own? Absolutely. If you can track down this CD, do so! This is one of those albums that could be played from beginning to end in one evening and satisfy your techno cravings. Again, it is minimal, but it is also masterful.
