Shes best known as a Bollywood playback singer, a vocalist who records tracks for film actors to lip-sync to. In the early 1970s after meeting sarod maestro Ali Akbar Khansaheb in London, I started to explore his music. Although, he was the first major Indian classical musician to perform in the USA at the behest of Yehudi Menuhin in 1955, a recording was made with Pandit Chatur Lal, which was released thereafter. He collaborated with John Handy for a Jazz Album - Karuna Supreme and with Yvette Mimoux - Baudelaire's 'Flowers of Evil. Duet with Pandit Nikhil Banerjee. Trained as a classical musician and instrumentalist by his father, Allauddin Khan, he also composed numerous classical ragas and film scores. He established a music school in Calcutta in 1956, and the Ali Akbar College of Music in 1967, which moved with him to the United States and is now based in San Rafael, California, with a branch in Basel
