ALHAMBRA - LUNA NOVA Fly Agaric 2002 CD 45m In the annals of Italian prog there has always been another side to it all, the psychedelic underground, the trip-folk cross-over, and such-like, with acts like Folli Di Deo, No Strange or Kryptasthesie. It trips and glides nicely, though the lead singer does take some getting used to. Nice, especially towards the end, as it all trips over into Aktuala cum Third Ear Band territory. Their works have been released by Fly Agaric, an independent label founded in 1998 by one of the members of the band, Andrea Monetti. There are plenty of ways to tell the difference between the two artists, but first and foremost, Novas got an appealing bossa nova breeziness about her thats more conservative and more comfortable. While the hit single Drummer Boy is Luna Nuevas infectious and big Black Eyed Peas moment, everything else here is much more sensible and less showy, a smart move since Nova seems like a free-spirited near-hippie at heart. ALHAMBRA - LUNA NOVA (Fly Agaric! 2002) CD 45m
In the annals of Italian prog there has always been another side to it all, the psychedelic underground, the trip-folk cross-over, and such-like, with acts like Folli Di Deo, No Strange or Kryptasthesie. Add to those ranks Alhambra, who play a strangely deranged folk, with equally strange vocals, and a psychedelic fuzz all over it. It trips and glides nicely, though the lead singer does take some getting used to. Nice, especially towards the end, as it all trips over into Aktuala cum Third Ear Band territory. My review from Audion #48 (2003)

As I love the two other related bands to this: Arjuna and Ku, I decided to reinvestigate this. Relistening to it now, I can easily see/hear why I didn't keep it. Really, the first half is okay. But "Dèi Avversi" is dreadful. I can hear more Claudio Rocchi, or other left-field crooners of the Cramps Records stable in Nick Le Rose's singing. But I'd rather he didn't sing! Anyway, after this it goes all instrumental. With "Ulisse Nella Nebbia" and "Cronotopo Di Bachtin" it could be an entirely different group, quite Krautrock fusion styled - no doubt where the Embryo and Amon Düül dedications come in. The trippy folk jam "Φενγαρι (Fengari)" is also Krautrocky, but reminds me as much of American ethnic rockers Pseudo Buddha. A pity they didn't do a whole album up to the calibre of those last 19 minutes.
