Short intro
Trumpeter Alex Sipiagin, one of the mainstays of the Mingus Big Band, has some distinguished company on his Criss Cross debut: Chris Potter on tenor sax, David Kikoski on piano, Scott Colley on bass, and Jeff Tain Watts on drums. It's highly unlikely that an A-list quintet such as this would let listeners down and, sure enough, the disc swings like crazy from beginning to end. The program is bookended by two takes of Colley's Catalyst, which the bassist also recorded for his Portable Universe album. 1 Catalyst Take 1 5:15 2 Room 28 7:54 3 Steppin' Zone 8:19 4 Spacing 11:11 5 Missouri Uncompromised 8:12 6 Moonstone 6:39 7 Conception 8:36 8 Catalyst Take 2 4:51. This is a fine group of jazz musicians headed by an exceptional Alex Sipiagin on trumpet. Sipiagin is, I believe, originally a Russian who migrated to the United States to connect up with the New York Scene. He is technically refined and has a great soul as demonstrated by his musicianship. Alex Sipiagin. Steppin Zone, 2001. Room 28, 07:56. Steppin' Zone, 08:21. Missouri Uncompromised, 08:14. Alex Sipiagin was born on June 11, 1967 in Yaroslavl, Russia, a provincial city 150 miles from Moscow known for being home to one of Russias most famous opera singers, Leonid Sobinov, also Alexs great-grand uncle. At 12 years of age, he began playing in a children's orchestra, studying under the great symphonic trumpeter and teacher, Mikhael Tsamaiev, his first inspiration. Steppin' Zone. This may be Alex Sipiagin's debut recording, but the Russian trumpet virtuoso is a fixture in New York's hardcore jazz community. Familiar to Criss Cross listeners through sideman work with trombonist Conrad Herwig, his long-time partner in the Mingus orchestra, Sipiagin gathers here young tenor giant Chris Potter and A-list rhythm men David Kikoski piano, Scott Colley bass and Jeff 'Tain' Watts drums for a session marked by on-the-edge improvising tempered by authoritative knowledge.
