William Alexander Chilton December 28, 1950 March 17, 2010 was an American singer-songwriter, guitarist, and record producer, best known as the lead singer of the Box Tops and Big Star. Chilton's early commercial success in the 1960s as a teen vocalist for the Box Tops was never repeated in later years with Big Star and in his subsequent indie music solo career on small labels, but he drew an intense following among indie and alternative music musicians. The liner notes and artwork are fine of course, as one would expect from Rhino, but the selection is uneven. 5 songs from Big Star's Third Album is a bit much, as that stuff is best heard on the original album re-issued by Rykodisc in 1992. It would have been better just sticking to Alex's solo stuff all the way through. It would be nice if Rhino could issue an updated anthology 2-CD of his solo work that included the best of his 90s output.
