1. Applicants Must Possess The Following Skills #7
My obsession with work, in concept and practice, necessity and
desire - constructed entirely of a small sample of my wife
and me speaking, reading want ads, thoroughly processed.

2.Cluster Fantasy I
I am fascinated, like Feldman and Xenakis, with that point of perception
at which complexity dissolves into simplicity, and simplicity reveals intrinsic
complexity. I find it exhilarating to lose my sense of what exactly is
happening in a piece of music, or whether, in fact, anything is happening
at all.

3.Applicants Must Possess The Following Skills #6

1.Tallea II
In which dozens of more or less random asynchronous cycles of
manipulated data that intersect, interact, and occasionally cancel one
another out, are imposed upon 3 samples of the human voice, speaking
and singing in an echo of processes that I trust will be familiar even if the
results are not.

No sound sources other than the voices of my wife, myself, and a mystery
guest(!) were used. An improvisatory version of this piece was perfomed
live at the Werehouse July 14th, 2004, in Winston-Salem, NC.

Talea I was an instrumental work for 2 violins and cello that premiered at
the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in 1998, in Winston-Salem.

My first taste of Aaron Bachelder and he brings us a double disc titled "Semi-Automatic Music". The theme of this experiment seems to be very classical orientated. There are lots of notes describing how each piece was created and what was used. The notes help a lot with what the artist is trying to bring to your mind and I wish more releases did this. An excerpt from track #2, Cluster Fantasy I, reads; "I find it exhilarating to lose my sense of what exactly is happening in a piece of music, or whether, in fact, anything is happening at all." and it works very well for this piece as it's a 20 minute slow ambient movement with slight variations and subtle textures in change and sound. There's a bit of bass involved at times half way through and the levels pick up as the track progresses. Tracks 1 and 3 are much the same and feature random sounds and bleeps which come across very quite at times. You have to pay attention as well or you'll miss something. The 2nd disc is one long 42-minute piece titled "Tallea II" and features; "...sound sources other than the voices of my wife, myself, and a mystery guest(!) were used." So what you get it something that sounds messed up at times. Different vocals being pulled and ripped and looped and put through 40+ minutes worth of effects. A very odd listen indeed but something I enjoyed as I never heard much like it before. Overall a great double disc for someone new to Aaron Bachelder and something fans of ambient I think would enjoy more as this is "non-harsh and unautomated indeed!"
