Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions is a satirical novella by the English schoolmaster Edwin Abbott Abbott, first published in 1884 by Seeley & Co. of London. Everyone should read Flatland at least once. Thanks to Brewster for suggesting it Jonathan. I am reading it with my 9 year old and he loves it, and I loved it in high school. Fun premise and social satire. I admit, said he - when I mentioned to him this objection - I admit the truth of your critic's facts, but I deny his conclusions. It is true that we have really in Flatland a Third unrecognized Dimension called height,' just as it is also. I watched Star Trek TNG last night and Flatland was a B Story in the episode called The Loss where Deanna Troi loses her empathic abilities. First published in 1884 the story within the book is about a Square living in a two-dimensional world learning about the many types of spaces. In other words the book is about learning about multiple dimensions. But it was also a way for the author, Edwin A. Abbott to talk about Victorian England, attacking sexism and the class system. But there is no Romance in the book. Unless the subtitle means it is a Scientific Romance . Start of this project gutenberg ebook flatland . Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions. Edwin A. Written in 1884, the story is told by A. Square, who lives in Flatland, a world of two-dimensions, which means length and width, but no depth just like the Kardashians. The men of Flatland are multi-sided polygons, and the more sides an individual has, the greater their social standing. On the other hand, women are all simple lines and have no voice in the governing of the society. Flatlanders are chauvinists.
